Aromatherapy is more than just a relaxing ritual to calm you down after a long day. It is actually an alternative or holistic form of medicine that can heal your mind, body and soul, simultaneously.
For those that don’t know, aromatherapy uses the volatile materials of plants, also known as essential oils. By simply inhaling these aromas, the body will experience numerous effects.
The National Association of Holistic Aromatherapy defines aromatherapy as “the art and science of utilizing naturally extracted aromatic essences from plants to balance, harmonize and promote the health of body, mind, and spirit.”
Aromatherapy has a substantial list of health benefits, including:
Aromatherapy can even change cognitive states and be used as a supplemental medicine.
However, there is far more to aromatherapy than simply using essential oils. Aromatherapy can be quite complex, involving carrier oils, absolutes, herbal distillates, vaporizer oils, and phytoncides. At Lica Cole, we infuse all our skincare and body care products with essential oils, not only to create an aromatherapeutic experience but because of elements such as anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties contained in essential oils.
Aromatherapy has been around in some form for thousands of years. During the 11th century, steam distillation made it possible to properly remove the essential oils from plant materials. According to OrganicFacts.com, “since then, cultures around the world have utilized aromatherapy for a wide range of functions. Perhaps the most common countries to find aromatherapy being practiced would be in India, France, England, and the United States, although it can be found in dozens of other countries as well.”
Another important element of aromatherapy is synergy. This refers to the blending to two or more essential oils; “syn” meaning together and “ergon” means work. When essential oils are blended together, the chemical constituents in individual oil can have a mutually enhancing effect on the others.
Synergy blends have been created in order to promote even more health benefits are more specific, such as for relaxing, sensual, alertness, respiratory or applications for use in pain.
Some examples of our favorite synergy blends include:
Lica Cole products were created with synergy in mind. If you take a look at the details tab for each product, we briefly explain the effect each essential oil blend will have once inhaled or applied to the skin.
So if you are feeling down, want to elevate pain, soothe your anxiety or want a way to invoke inner peace, aromatherapy might be just what you need.
