Rice Water: A Beauty Secret

Rice water has been the ancient Japanese beauty secret used by Geishas for hundreds of years. The water remaining in the pot of boiled rice has been used for centuries by women as a hair and skin treatment.

At Lica Cole, we believe in the power of rice water. In fact, our Green Secret formula included in the Good Vibe product line includes Matcha brewed in rice water, along with essential oils. Here are some of the amazing benefits of this beauty secret and how to use it:

How to Make Rice Water

First, let’s talk about how rice water is made. Usually when cooking rice, the water becomes absorbed, leaving you with perfectly cooked rice. Instead, use two or three tablespoons of white rice into a small saucepan and add two cups of water. Don’t add any butter or salt, as we are just after the starch from the rice. Boil for 20-30 minutes until the water becomes a milky white liquid. If you don’t want to boil the rice, you can simply soak it in water for 30 minutes. However, some experts say that boiling the rice draws out more of the starches into the water.

After boiling, strain the rice and save the water. Allow the water to cool and then store in a glass jar with a lid. Keep this in the refrigerator for up to four days.

Skin Benefits

For the skin, rice water is an effective beauty balm. It can be used for cleansing, toning and lightening hyperpigmentation, sun and age spots. Rice water firms and tightens the skin, reduces pore size, smoothes texture and bumps, leaving you with soft, fresh skin, even after the first use. It also promotes cell growth, stimulates blood flow and helps to keep your skin bright.

With regular use, hyperpigmentation or brown spots are said to diminish. Rice water is also good for acne since it reduce redness and clear blemishes.

How does rice water do this?

Rice water contains vitamins, like vitamin C and A, as well as minerals and amino acids essential for minimizing free radical damage from the sun and the environment.  Ferulic acid, which is a great antioxidant, and allantoin, known for it’s anti-inflammatory properties are also included.

How to Use

Soak a cotton ball thoroughly in the rice water and apply to your face in the morning and evening. Let your face dry naturally.

Try it for a week and see if you love what it does for your complexion!
