Flower Power: Our Favorite Flowers for Healthy Skin

It is no secret that flowers are beautiful to look at, decorate with and even wear on our clothing. Their aromas fill our homes when we place a bouquet on our kitchen tables, and they bring vibrancy to our gardens. They are signs of love and friendship, or for saying sorry.

But did you know that flowers are also amazing for skin health?

At Lica Cole, we love using all natural and plant based ingredients for our skin care. That is who we are. And some of the essential oils and plant extracts used in our products, come from our favorite flowers!

Geranium

Geranium is one of our absolute favorite flower extracts. Found in our Ayurvedic Smoothing Silk, Organic Whipped Butter, and Organic Wellness Perfume Oil, Geranium is perhaps the secret to beautiful skin. This sweet smelling flower was used by the ancient Egyptians for years as a way to promote radiant skin. Its list of health benefits is lengthy, as it is commonly used in aromatherapy to lessening fatigue and uplift the mood.

In addition to reducing blood pressure, protecting the body against infections and acting as a defense for the immune system, Geranium oil has the power to minimize the look of wrinkles, due to its astringent properties. By tightening the facial skin, the effect of aging inevitably slows down. This oil also promotes new cell growth and contains anti-inflammatory properties which can strongly aid the skin in repairing itself.

Chamomile

Most are familiar with this flower in the form of a calming tea to drink when your stomach is upset or you are having trouble sleeping. But the health benefits of this daisy-like flower go as far back to ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome. They used this medicinal herb to remedy numerous conditions including asthma, colic, fevers, inflammations, nausea, nervous complaints, children's ailments, skin diseases and cancer.

We love using it for the skin as chamomile contains a high source of antioxidants, which can protect the skin and body from free radicals. These antioxidants can better immune functions, lower rates of mood disorders, reduced pain and swelling and create healthier skin, hair, nails, teeth and eyes. The flavonoids in Chamomile essential oils penetrate below the skin surface into the deeper skin layers of the skin which can preserve a youthful appearance. It is also useful for getting rid of signs of aging like dark spots and fine lines. You can find Chamomile flower extract in our Organic Cleansing Smoothie, Ayurvedic Smoothing Silk, and Organic Whipped Butter.

Marigolds

Marigolds are known for their vibrant, orange petals, sweet aroma, and bug repellent abilities. But, these gorgeous plants are so much more!

High in antioxidants and Vitamin C, Marigold is amazing for reducing acne and redness in the skin. These properties can fight against free radicals that create signs of aging, like wrinkles and sagging skin.

Marigold fight against bacteria growth, making them a great treatment for wounds or cuts.

Elderflower

Elderflower, or elderberry, extract is an ancient remedy used in a variety of cultures, for many years. This species of plant blooms white flowers and produces green berries that turn red and then black when ripe. The flower, however, is the main source of medical and skin benefits.

Elder flowers are rich in bioflavonoids, which can help prevent wrinkles and signs of aging. They have astringent properties that cause the skin to tighten and reduce the size of pores. Elder flowers also contain antioxidants that protect against the sun and other free-radical damage, leaving you with smooth, clear skin. We infuse our Ayurvedic Smoothing Silk with this beautiful, healing flower.

Jasmine

The most romantic of flowers, Jasmine blooms during the night, dispelling a sweet and strong aroma. This flower has long been associated with love, often inspiring poets and novelist.

Jasmine oil has an incredible amount of health benefits, from reducing labor pains during childbirth to improving immunity,  to one of it’s most popular functions, increasing libido.

We love this romantic flower for its beautiful aroma, which is why we have infused our Organic Wellness Perfume Oil with top notes of this floral oil.

For the skin, it is extremely effective in balancing skin moisture when skin is dehydrated. Jasmine oil is considered an antibiotic and antiviral which can help calm skin irritation and inflammation.

Lavender

In addition to numerous health benefits, Lavender can do wonders for the skin. It inhibits the bacteria that cause the initial infection or acne and helps to regulate some of the over-excretion of oil. It can reduce the signs of scarring after the acne has begun to heal, which is why it is widely recommended by dermatologists and aromatherapists. Lavender is also full of antioxidants which will fight against the damaging effects of free radicals and keep skin looking youthful.

You can find Lavender flower extract in our Ayurvedic Smoothing Silk and Organic Wellness Perfume Oil.
